The two families living in the house are a the VanDaans and the Franks, whom are very different from one another. The Franks are mainly quite and reserved with the exception for Anne who is the loud, personable one in the Frank family. As for the Vandaans, the mother is similar to Anne in the way that she is social and perky. Mr VanDaan has a temper and takes it out on Peter who is shy and awkward. Their parenting style is very different as well. The VanDaans are vey different from their son, just like the Franks are very different from their daughter. The main difference between them as parents is that the Franks seem to understand and adapt to Anne's personality. The VanDaans seem less accepting towards Peter and take their anger out on them. During times of desperation, the Franks seemed to have an enhanced knowledge of what to do and how to stay calm and collected. The VanDaans seem to have a hard time handling the situation. The Franks also seem to have a more positive lookout on the Holocaust, and I believe that helps triumphing over harsh conditions.
"You know, we are going to forget how to dance. When we get out we won't remember a thing!"
This quote is said by Anne at the beginning of the scene after Peter refuses to dance with her and spend time with her. He refuses to giver her attention due to the fact that he has had few interactions with girls. This makes Anne very upset. She says this because it seems as if no one around her wants to have fun or act normal due to the Holocaust. She is finally realizing the effect that the Holocaust is having on everyone. She feels that people have lost their sense of fun and she is the only one that still has it. Anne has the fear that things will be different after they get out of hiding and people will loose their sense of joy due to the war.
