Edward Lear was born in London in 1812. He was the 20th of 21 children in his family. Because of his family being so large, Edward received little attention from his parents. This caused him to feel lonely which led to self hatred. He didn't attend Elementary School, Middle School, High School, or college. His sisters' were the only ones that went to school and he relied on them to teach him. Edward's education was provided by his sisters. Later in his life he suffered from a mild case of epilepsy. He spent most of his adult life in Italy living in small houses, and made a lliving by painting birds and landscapes. Edward fell into a deep state of depression. From his childhood until death he always felt a sense of loneliness, but he enjoyed one thing, hanging out with his friends' children. Edward found that he had a talent drawing, writing, and making up humorous games that made kids laugh. While the rest of the world seemed dark and gloomy to him, his escape to happiness was writing poems that sounded like gibberish. His poems have a clear childish feel to them in the form of a limerick. His childhood had an effect on this. The characters in most of his poems are seeking justice and freedom like he was trying to seek justice and freedom from his hardships.
