I chose the poem There Was A Young Lady by Edward Lear. This poem resembles that some of his poems that have strange and curious characters that may have been a result of his imaginative world. It talks about a lady with a chin that looked like the point of a pin in the first stanza. The second stanza talks about a lady who played a flute to her uncle's white pigs. The third stanza talks about a lady with unique eyes that made people turn away in surprise. The fourth stanza mentions a lady from Russia who screamed really loud. The fifth and final stanza talks about a lady whose nose kept growing and growing (like Pinocchio). My interpretation of this is that these are characters that he made up or maybe they represent other people from his childhood that he maybe met or known. We will never truly know his interpretation of the poem and must rely on our own. His poems overall have a childish feel but I think this one in general sounds something that a child might come up with. I think that the reasons his poems sound so childish was because he enjoyed hanging out with children and making them laugh. There is a second part to this poem called There Was An Old Man.
