Kira finds out that they are building a dyeing center for her because of Annabella's death. She is nervous that she won't remember all of the dyes and she doesn't have Annabella to guide her. Thomas reassures her that he wrote all of them down and will help her memorize them. Kira wanted to visit the fields to see Annabella but Jamison said no. Time was running out and the presentation would be in four days. Kira expresses to Thomas how she is upset because of Jo being held captive. Thomas said because she was a young child they had to lock her up; Thomas knows because it happened to him. Kira notices some of the similarities between her, Thomas, and Jo. They both realize that they are something that the rest of the community aren't, artists. Thomas carved a key when he was younger that could fit through the lock. Together they plan to visit Jo and unlock the door.
Feelings Toward the Chapter
I think it was crucial for Kira to realize who she truly is, an artist. Unlike our society where there are artists everywhere in every form, creativity is limited in the community. This is one of the factors that really sets apart Kira's world from ours. Kira seems to have a connection and cares for Jo because she is willing to visit her and help her. This demonstrates Kira's character traits especially. She is strong, independent and most importantly determined. Kira is also courageous and is aware that there is risk involved, but her care for Jo overruns the fear and risk greatly.
