Kira and Thomas go to the Fen (a neighborhood in the community where Matt lives) to go searching for him because they haven't seen him in 2 days. They ask around and some kids say that Matt ran away from home because of his mother's abuse but they don't know where. Kira and Thomas decide to try asking Matt's mom. Matt's family lives in a poorer part of the Fen. When Kira sees his house she realizes that Matt lives a way tougher life than she had before she moved into the Edifice. They meet Matt's younger brother and Kira trades him a leather cord for information on Matt. He says that Matt was going to the Edifice to live with his new friends (Thomas and Kira) but he wanted to give them a gift first. Matt was searching for the plant that made blue dye.
Feelings Toward the Chapter
I was very worried that Matt was really sick or even dead but I was relived to hear that he was okay. Matt has become one of my favorite characters because he is rambunctious yet compassionate too. When Kira sees life at the Fen she realizes that there are others who are going through much worse. The Fen is unsanitary and the people are starving. This teaches Kira an important life lesson. She learns that pain is relative and respecting someone's emotions and lifestyle could go a long way. She may have hated her life before the Edifice but people in the Fen probably dreamed of having her life. I feel that this is an extremely important lesson. Little things like waking up in the morning may seem like nothing but some people don't get that chance.
