Main Events
At dawn Kira went to Annabella's garden to start preparing the blue thread. While working a thought came to mind, what if her mother's death wasn't an accident? She realized that the Council wanted to capture and keep Thomas, Kira, and Jo's gifts of creativity. They were artists that will create the future, and the only power the Council has is restraining them. Matt would take Christopher home, he would be their form of communication walking back and forth on the long path. Matt tries to persuade Kira to come saying that there is even a boy her age, two syllables, with bright blue eyes. His name is Jonas. Christopher gives Kira a gift of blue threads from his shirt. She assures him that one day their villages would know each other. With the thread in one hand, Kira waves goodbye to Matt and her father, and for a second she feels the blue thread live like her cloth.
Feelings Toward the Chapter
I overall enjoyed this chapter and this book. There was a Giver reference in this chapter as Jonas being the boy Kira could marry. I think the ending of the book was content, there was no big cliff hanger and life will just go on for Kira. She will look at the Council of Guardians and her own community differently. If there was a sequel to be written, my guess would be that it would be about Kira trying to connect the two villages. Gathering Blue wasn't action packed but it still had a thrill. It was well written with vivid descriptions and an overall good writing style. I learned a lot from this book such as creative instinct, self interest vs compassion, and the choice between power and freedom.
