Main Events
Kira, Thomas, and Matt go down the stairs to find the crying voice. They find another corridor where the crying is coming from. Kira hears Jamison's voice yelling at the crying child, then the child begins to sing. Matt says that he knows the child because she used to live in the same neighborhood (referred to as the Fen) as him. Her name is Jo, she is younger than Matt and like Kira and Thomas she is an orphan. Her mother died of an illness and when she was brought to the fields her father was so devastated that he killed himself. She now lives in the Edifice because of her singing talent. If she wasn't gifted in singing she would have been given away. Later, Jamison comes and checks on Kira to see her progress on the robe. He states that although Katrina was good at threading Kira was excellent. Kira tells Jamison about Annabella's claim of there being no beasts, Jamison states that Annabella is just old. He says he saw when Kira's father was taken by the beasts. Kira touches her cloth and senses that it is trying to warn her.
Feelings Toward the Chapter
From this chapter I learned that if you are a young orphan with no talent you are given away to a family who wants children (like adoption). If you are an older child (like Kira) and are parentless and useless you will be taken to the fields. Fortunately for Kira her weaving skills saved her. I want to learn more about Jo. Why does the Council of Guardians need a little girl that can sing. I assume they already have a singer because that is why Kira and Thomas are making the staff and robe. I also was under the impression that the Singer had to be male since in this community only men get such high honor. I hope they reveal more about Jo in the upcoming chapters. Thomas, Kira, and Jo are the only ones in the community that freely express their creativity through their talents. Either the other members of the community don't want to or are restricted from it.
