Dor (Father Time) Dor had found his two people for his journey. He is trying to understand their complex mentality and craving for either more time or less. Dor thinks about all of the modern tools on Earth (phones and computers) and how easy and fast you can get tasks done. He also points out how little peace the human race can accomplish. Dor watches both Victor and Sarah’s dying bodies. He brings both of their bodies to a warehouse and puts the hourglass between them. Then, he opens it up and lets the sand (every moment of the universe) spill out onto the ground. He thinks of Alli and every instant of the universe passed through Dor’s mind. In the end, Dor stopped the world. Sarah Lemon Sarah sees Ethan on Christmas night at Dunkin Donuts. She tells him how much she loves him. Ethan does not feel the same way and rejects her gift. Sarah is heartbroken. She trudges back home into her room depressed. Lorraine is trying to figure out what is wrong with her, Sarah rejects her. She plans to send a Facebook message to tell him that she is sorry. When Sarah goes onto Ethan’s Facebook page she sees a post from him talking about how he dated her out of pity and she was an insane stalker. People commented under it tearing Sarah apart. This greatly hurts her. In that moment, she decides to kill herself. Sarah was drinking vodka and went into the garage and got into her car. She turned on the ignition and planned to kill herself from carbon monoxide poisoning. Victor Delamonte Victor has stopped dialysis and is in a bed in his living room doing work. He has been experiencing symptoms since off dialysis. A few business colleagues came to visit him to say goodbye. Victor insisted on his wife going to their annual New Years Gala where they donate to a charity. Victor does this so he can be alone. Grace and he exchange their last words. Victor is transported to the cryonics facility. They put his dying body an ice tub for him to be frozen. “There was no hope in fixing this, and when hope is gone, time is punishment” This is stated during Sarah’s section of the novel when she decides to kill herself. Hope is extremely powerful and can act as the motivation for something, even someone’s will to stay alive. When hope diminishes, it feels as if there is nothing in life (or the situation) to look forward to. This makes life unbearable and seem like it lasts forever (time is punishment). In Sarah’s case, Ethan was her only hope in her ordinary, boring life. She feels that there is nothing to look forward in life anymore, this causes her to kill herself. |
