Dor (Father Time) Dor and Alli are moving out of the city or else Dor will be enslaved in the tower. They must leave their children behind; Alli doesn't want to leave. While sitting on a hill watching a sunset Dor created the first water clock, and this upsets Alli greatly. Nim has built the tower and claimed that he has shot an arrow into the sky and wounded one of the gods. Alli and Dor settle into a small house outside of the city. They have small amounts of food. One day an elderly couple plauged with disease comes into their home. Alli hugs the old woman and catches the disease. Alli gets sicker and sicker; she begs Dor to pray to the gods for help. He asks for more time. In the end, time runs out and Alli dies from the plague. Dor runs into the city and climbs the tower. He empowers others to climb it too. None of the slaves and guards make it to the top. Instead, they fall to the bottom with their tongues twisted into different languages. This passage of the book was inspired by a biblical story of the tower of Babel. Dor was the only person to climb to they top of the tower and is sent to the cave. Sarah Lemon Sarah is anxious for her date and she continues to get ready. She talks about how popular cute boys like this one is never notice her. She met him at a shelter. There is clear tension between her and her mother and their relationship has diminished over the years. Sarah wants time to go slower. In the end, she walks out of the door and is going to the meeting place for their date. Her cell phone rings and she grabs it from her coat pocket. Victor Delamonte Victor calls research offices and asks for information of immortality. He doesn't tell his wife. He talks about how his wife has been nicer since the illness. Victor is fully aware of how his illness hinders him, he is unable to go to any of his penthouses is Hawaii, London, California, and the Hamptons. |

Power has a huge impact on human behavior. The wanting for power can cause people to do insane things even to the point of combustion. For example, in the story everyone that climbed the tower fell and faced a language punishment (except for Dor). While some reach the point of power, there is always cons to the method of getting to the top. In the end, power will always find a way to explode out of proportion.
