In Chapter 26 of Red Kayak by Priscilla Cummings, Brady went to the courthouse to watch JT and Digger. He is worried about what might happen to them. The chapter overall surprised me but when Digger admitted to guilty plea because in past chapters he kept bugging Brady to get rid of the drill so none of them would get in trouble. I think that because the situation has become so serious he decided not to fight it. "Do you still wish to enter a guilty plea? Master Williams again. I guess she wanted to be sure they knew what they were doing. Yes ma'am, JT replied. I do said Digger. The most important line to me was when Master Williams read the DiAngelos victims impact statement. "Ben was supposed to start nursery school next month. Now there will be an empty cubby where he would have hung his Winnie the Pooh jacket. There won't be fingerpaint pictures to hang on the fridge. Or birthday parties to prepare for anymore. The tricycle we ordered is still in the box in the basement. No more stories in bed. There isn't a single moment that goes by when we don't think about our son." This line is crucial to the chapter. In the past chapters we haven't heard anything about the DiAngelos. It started to look like they were moving on from Ben, but after Brady found the red kayak with holes and told the police everything changed. We learn that although they seemed to have moved on, even with the new baby on the way, the DiAngelos will never forget about what happened on the river that lead to the death of their son. I would have reacted poorly hearing about Ben would have not made me have pity on JT or Digger even if I was their family. They cost a little boy's life.
