In Chapters 11 and 12 of Red Kayak by Priscilla Cummings Brady and Mrs DiAngelo were talking about butterfly gardens. Brady recommended certain plants and bushes such as azaleas, rhododendrons, and spice-bush. Rocks were an important part to a butterfly garden because it gives the butterflies a place to warm up before they take off, so it has to be in the sun. The colors, flowers, and other aspects in the garden are symbolic to the story in many ways. Brady's mother had to go through a similar process of grieving when they lost Amanda. The butterfly garden may help Mrs DiAngelo get over Ben like it did with Mrs Parks and Amanda. The bright colors and butterflies symbolize hope with Mrs Parks. She believes that the butterflies are like little spirits in terms they represent Amanda. It is her way of thinking that Amanda is still there even though she died six years ago. Grieving is hard, especially when you lose a child. I think that the butterfly garden will help ease the pain that was caused on that one rainy day when Brady saw a bright red kayak sailing on the river. If only he yelled something out.
